Problem with Computer|Manage menu item!
Here's a strange one: When I right click on my desktop Computer icon, then left click on Manage, absolutely nothing happens - but all of the other Computer menu items work normally! I researched this problem thoroughly - here's my notes in no particular order: - I am the administrator so this isn't the problem. - Left clicking on Manage is supposed to start up a program named COMPACT.MSC. I found a number of copies of this program scattered around my hard drive, and double clicking on any of them started up the program with no problem. - I made a new shortcut to run a 64-bit copy of COMPMGMT.MSC, this shortcut works fine. Thanks to the new shortcut, this problem is no longer an emergency! - Using RegEdit, I dug into the registry to see if I could figure out where the menu command Manage would run COMPMGMT.MSC, but unfortunately had no luck with this. - I found a program named ShellExView that did a good job telling me what shell extensions, but it told me nothing about how to replace one which was missing. "Manage" wasn't one of the items in the ShellExView extension, so this program didn't really help me at all. My computer is a new Dell XPS-8000 running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I guess all I need is a link to information which would tell me how to attach the menu command Manage to the COMPMGMT.MSC program. Or, a .REG file which would I could use to update my registry so that the Manage command will work normally. If anyone has information which can help, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Bill

Don't know if this would work or not, but right click your desktop and go to Personalize, then click on Change Desktop Icons, uncheck Computer and click apply. Reboot (which may not be necessary), then go through the motions again but check the Computer this time and apply. Right click Computer and see if this makes it function again (context menus) MCSE, MCSA, MCDST

I'm pretty sure clicking on "Manage" is supposed to start compmgmt.msc, not compact.msc.Check the content of the followingregistry keys... On my Win 7 32 bit system, on which compmgmt.msc is properly tied to the Manage menu item, I have these values:[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\Manage\command](Default) = (REG_EXPAND_SZ) %SystemRoot%\system32\CompMgmtLauncher.exe[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\Manage\command](Default) = (REG_EXPAND_SZ) %SystemRoot%\system32\CompMgmtLauncher.exe-Noel

Can you open a blank console with mmc? I.e. Start\Run mmc.If it runs, you can try adding a snap-in, one of which is "Computer Management".If mmc.exe does not run, it might point to the problem. On the other hand, are we sure it works in Home Edition? I remember something about certain things being disabled. Just a thought.

Computer | Manage worked fine for the first few days I had the system. Unfortunately it was long gone by the time I discovered the problem, so I have no idea what I was doing at the time it disappeared.- Bill

I had to reinstall everything, because I did not find any solution less destructive.Reinstalling all programs, in small groups and with frequent recovery points, I discovered that this error in the explorer's manage shell was caused bya-squared Free 4.5.0.27.Having a point of suitable recovery there were no problems. So I can not say whether a simple uninstall solves the problem, but I think the first attempt to do.I hope to be helpful to someone.HiPaolo Cellini
